5 Ways To Take Great Care Of Your Eyeglasses

Posted on

Eyeglasses can be expensive, so when you purchase eyeglasses, you want to make sure that you take good care of them. Additionally, many insurance companies will only pay for one pair of eyeglasses every two years, so you really need to make sure that you make your eyeglasses last.

#1 Rinse Your Glasses Before Cleaning

Before you try to wipe your glasses off or clean them in any way, you should rinse your glasses under water. Rinsing your glasses under water is a smooth way to remove little particles of dust and dirt off the lenses of your glasses without scratching them. Even a tiny particle of dirt can scratch your glasses.

#2 Air Dry

When you rinse off your glasses with water, allow your glasses to air dry if possible. Air drying will help ensure that your glasses do not get damaged.

#3 Use the Right Cleaners

You do not have to use a cleaner to clean your glasses. However, if you choose to use a cleaner, make sure that you use one that is specifically designed to clean eyeglasses. Do not use cleaners made for windows and mirrors. Window and mirror cleaners usually contain ammonia, which will remove any of the special coating on your lens and can damage your glasses. Additionally, you don't want these chemicals getting anywhere near your eyes.

#4 Use The Right Cloth

If you can't air dry your glasses or if you need to wipe away some dirt, you are going to want to make sure that you use the right cloth. The coating on your glasses can easily wear down with time, which is why you need to be careful not to scratch them.

Use a microfiber cloth or a 100% cotton cloth. This will prevent the fibers from the cloth from damaging your eyeglasses. Do not use your shirt, tissues, napkins, or just any random towel. The rough texture could scratch and damage your glasses.

Keep in mind that you need to keep the cloth clean. Just because it doesn't look dirty to you doesn't mean that the cloth is free from damaging dust and dirt. Clean the cloth that you use on your glasses in the wash every week.

#5 Be Careful with Your Grip

When you hold your glasses to clean them, hold the part of your glasses that rests on the bridge of your nose. This will prevent you from getting fingerprints on the glasses and will also help ensure that you don't bend your glasses.
